In light of the new television series, The Playboy Club (Premiering on NBC September 19th at 10/9c), we’ve decided to make a list of our favorite Playboy appearances. Playboy appears in a variety of forms, from the magazine to bunnies to the Mansion to cameos by Hugh M. Hefner, the man behind the bowtie.

10. Legally Blonde

Though Legally Blonde isn’t one of our favorite movies, or really a movie that we’ve seen more than once, we couldn’t ignore its influence. Even before The Girls Next Door series made the Playboy brand popular again, Reese Witherspoon sports this classic bunny costume to what-she-thinks-is-a-costume party, and she rocks it.

9. Earth Girls Are Easy

Woody, a pool cleaner, tells two aliens, Wiploc and Zeebo, to go in the gas station and get some grub. For some reason, Zeebo is carrying a toy gun with him as the aliens barge in on the gas station attendant reading a Playboy magazine. Thinking he’s being robbed, the gas station attendant hands the aliens the entire cash drawer and candy. Wiploc notices the magazine laying on the counter and grabs it before they exit.

8. House Bunny

House Bunny’s plot revolves around a Playboy bunny who is declared too old to live in the Mansion anymore and is evicted. As Anna Faris’s character works to figure out who she is without the support and dreams of Hef and Playboy, she finds herself at a sorority house (a mini-Mansion!) in need of a house mother. Hilarity ensues.

7. Howard the Duck

During the opening credits of “Howard the Duck”, we are bombarded by “punny” duck versions of many brands, music, and movies that were prominent in the 80′s. Do you think they would pass on Playboy…err Playduck? The magazine was one of the last things Howard saw before being sucked away from Duckworld.

6. Weird Science

While messing around with their computer, Wyatt and Gary decide to create a woman. They hack the power company to supercharge the computer, and Gary gets the idea to feed the computer information. The first thing they do is head to a locked chest and open it. Voila! there’s a massive collection of 80′s Playboy magazines that they cut up to create Lisa, the perfect woman.

5. The Ladies Man

During a narrative by Billy Dee Williams, we learn that Leon Phelps was dropped off at the Playboy Mansion as a baby. After years of hanging out with Hugh Hefner and the bunnies, he left as a man…a ladies man. While they don’t mention Playboy at all, it’s pretty obvious that it is the Mansion, the bunnies, and Mr. Hefner. The movie’s IMDB page lists Hugh Hefner as a character. If it’s good enough for IMDB, it’s good enough for us.

4. Her Alibi

Tom Selleck plays a best-selling (though currently struggling) mystery writer. In one of the less traditional Playboy appearances on this list, we get a shot of the classic three-columned interview page which appears in every Playboy issue. We really appreciate that here the Playboy stereotype is being broken a little bit as a man is being showcased in the magazine.

3. Beverly Hills Cop II

There’s a moment in the movie where Axel Foley, Taggart, and Billy Rosewood (disguised as a pool cleaning team) enter the Playboy Mansion. After they finish admiring the bunnies, the cops find the bad guy and make a ruckus. Out of nowhere, Hugh Hefner butts in, asks if there’s a problem and kicks both the cops and the bad guys out. Axel and Hef should do a spin off movie together. Hey, it’s gotta be better than Beverly Hills Cop III.

2. Miss March

Zach Cregger plays a man, Eugene Bell, who wakes up from a coma to find out (from his best friend and Playboy’s #1 fan Tucker Cleigh played by Trevor Moore) that his high-school sweetheart is now a Playboy centerfold. This movie oozes with Playboy, from the magazine to the Playboy philosophy to the classic pipe to a party at the Mansion to Playmate of the Year Sara Underwood and a moving appearance by Hef, who gives an inspirational speech towards the end of the movie. “There’s a bunny deep down inside each and every woman.”

1. Adventures in Babysitting

We’ve chosen Adventures in Babysitting for our number one spot because the usage of Playboy is by far the most creative of the bunch. Chris plays a senior in high school and babysitter who, throughout the film, is mistaken for a Playboy centerfold. The magazine shows up in many scenes in different contexts and is essential to the otherwise wholesome plot.

Last night Ray Wray and I sat down and decided to watch The Toy on NetFlix. For those who are unfamiliar with The Toy, it stars Richard Pryor as a man who is in need of ten thousand dollars to save his house from being auctioned off. It just so happens he is at the right place at the right time when a rich spoiled brat decides to purchase him as a toy.

When I first saw The Toy, I was around seven or eight (only a few years younger than the main character). What I remember most about the movie were all the featured toys; the Wonder Wheel, The Robot Boxing Buddy, and even the remote control peeing dog. I also remember Richard Prior’s wild antics and that the son was the same actor in A Christmas Story that got his tongue stuck to the flag pole. Of course I didn’t see the movie as social commentary on race issues in the ‘80s, since I was only a kid.

Upon watching it again, I can safely say the experience was drastically different. I noticed that this movie had scope. I was fascinated by all of the items in the department store and all the people in the office building. This visual stimulation is probably due to watching the movie in HD (kudos to the director).

Aside from the improved video experience, I found the Jack Brown character a bit hokey. Watching this movie as an adult, I felt sorry for Richard Pryor having to act in this movie. It felt like I was watching Pauley Shore deliver lines and attempt physical comedy. Since my first viewing of The Toy, I’ve seen other Richard Pryor movies and his standup act, and I’d have to say that this was a bona fide paycheck movie. When I was little, I was oblivious. Jack Brown was a hero-type to me like Ernest P. Worrell or Pee Wee Herman, but now Jack Brown has no integrity at all. He is the same person who he is at the beginning of the movie. Aren’t there supposed to be lessons learned and all that good stuff?

After reflecting on The Toy, I would honestly not recommend this movie to anyone. If you have seen this movie before and have a good memory of it, keep it and never watch it again. I said that I felt bad for Richard Pryor, but I feel worse for Ray Wray Kowalczyk, who had to sit through this movie based on my choice and recommendation. Speaking of Ray Wray here’s what she had to say…

1991 Dennis’ Rating: Present Day Dennis’ Rating:

Ray Wray:

When I heard this was a movie that Dennis watched as a child, I thought back to the childhood live action movies that I hold dear: Mannequin, Labyrinth, Little Monsters, Look Who’s Talking, even Married to the Mob (perhaps the raciest of the bunch, with murder and love scenes). (Just a thought: Why do they all fall in the middle of the alphabet? Hmmm…) I expected something similar from The Toy. Despite the fact that I’d never watched it as a child, I felt like I could live vicariously through Dennis’s experience in a similar watching experience to seeing something like The Wizard for the first time at 20.

But The Toy didn’t bring me any nostalgia, and it should certainly never be considered a “kid movie”. It is rated PG-13 for a reason. From references to the Klan to a secret nudie painting to servants frequently referring to the business tycoon’s kid as Master Bates (Bates is his last name, but STILL, you should see the problem), this movie is lewd and crude in contrast to its super sweet opening credits filled with shots of stuffed animals.

In the most tragic moment of the film, Eric Bates asks Jack Brown (his toy for the week) to explain the birds and the bees to him. (Eric’s language isn’t so proper.) This child/kid/almost adolescent is so neglected by his own parents and the supervisors at his boarding school that he doesn’t have any idea what he needs to be doing with a girl, what he shouldn’t be doing with a girl, or generally how it all works. Brown explains that there’s time later for all that stuff, but now the boy needs to focus on more age-appropriate activities. Yeah, Brown’s lesson is a good one, but this scene is so sad, as the kid doesn’t have a single person in his life to ask these important questions to, and I’m not sure that this issue is ever resolved in the film’s ending.

Ray Wray’s Rating:

Once a week, we have this conversation: “Wait a minute, who is that?” “Who?” “That guy on the screen! What do we know him from?” “Oh…I’m not sure. Let’s look it up”. I’m sure most of you have had this same conversation. For example, I’m always picking out serial killers from the TV show Millennium, and Dennis constantly makes fun of me. I think this is an experience that all movie & tv watchers can relate to, and I’m so lucky to live in a world with IMDB.

We’ve compiled our list of the Top Ten That Guys. Some of them you may recognize, others you may not. These are people who show up in everything, but for some reason they aren’t well-known or well-recognized by their actual NAME. Our brains can only hold so much information—and that’s where the “that guys” come in.

#10 José Zúñiga

This guy’s eyebrows say it all. We recently watched him as a young mechanic in Alive and realized that this guy is in everything. From Ransom to his frequent appearances in various Law and Order (from the original to SVU to Criminal Intent) shows to his more recent role in Twilight, Zuniga has definitely earned his spot on our list.

#9 Sam McMurray

Though at first glance, McMurray seems to have a wide range of work, he most frequently plays a jerk. In The Wizard, he hates his stepson. In Raising Arizona, he wants to steal a baby who’s already been stolen. In Freaks and Geeks, he cheats on his wife. In Friends, he likes to smack Chandler’s butt. But the question we’re left with as viewers? Was he REALLY in that dinosaur suit when he provided the voice of Roy Hess in Dinosaurs? Intriguing.

#8 Keone Young

We fell in love with Young after seeing him as Mr. Lee, The Chinese Tailor in Dude Where’s My Car? But Young has appeared in many other memorable roles, from Surf Ninjas to My Girl 2 to his more recent role as the acupuncturist in Curb Your Enthusiasm. Though he’s frequently made up to look older and have facial hair, the truth of the matter is that this guy never ages.

#7 David Koechner

IMDB’s trivia introduces Koechner by saying that he’s good friends with Steve Carrell and Will Farrell. This is apparent simply by the roles he takes on. Though he got his start early on working on SNL, he frequently piggybacks with these major comedians. 2004 is when he really took off, jumping from Anchorman to The 40 Year Old Virgin to Talledega Nights to Semi-Pro while still carrying on a regular role as Todd Packer in The Office. Though these movies and TV spots might be the ones that get this “that guy” noticed, our personal favorite is watching Koechner as a semi-creepy boss in Waiting.

#6 Taylor Negron

The receding hairline. The sun burnt complexion. Those piercing eyes. What’s this guy’s net worth? He’s never been on a Late-Night couch in his life. It’s hard to know where to start with someone with such a range of roles. He got the funky scent out of Elaine’s hair in Seinfeld (well, he tried…) He delivered pizza in Bio-Dome (and Fast Times at Ridgemont High as well). His character names include Manager, Salesman in Mall, The Writer, Preacher, Celebrity Judge #1, Psychiatrist, and Priest. But though these characters might not have REAL names, this guy stands out.

#5 Keith David

A first glance, David’s IMDB resume shows a lot of voicework. However, we don’t just love him for his voice. David is able to mold to a variety of genres. Ray Wray’s personal favorite is his work on John Carpenter’s The Thing, a dramatic horror piece. Dennis would argue that There’s Something About Mary or Men at Work show off David’s comedic side. And nobody can deny this guy’s disturbing and altogether icky work as Big Tim in Requiem for a Dream. Of course, his voice echoes in our heads right now with that unforgettable line: “I know it’s pretty baby, but I didn’t take it out for air.”

#4 Sean Whalen

As his brief IMDB bio states, Whalen “works steadily in film, television, and on stage.” (How much more generic of a sentence can you get?) Though Whalen recently has worked on The Bold and The Beautiful, this guy is neither bold nor beautiful. He’s a freak. We love him because he’s a freak. Probably due to his appearance, Whalen plays horrifying, creepy, unsettling, and generally over-enthusiastic roles. He’s probably best known for the famous “Got Milk?” commercial, when, with a full mouth of peanut butter, he’s unable to say Aaron Burr.

#3 Mike Starr

Starr’s got an intimidating appearance. For this reason, he says, “I get a lot of calls for New York-oriented things, mob parts, cop roles. I think they stereotype me by size; that’s a bit of a pitfall. Some people bring me in for the big gentle guy or these killers. It’s hard to figure out what they think of me.” This quote reveals a lot about the kind of spots we see him in. It’s tough to forget his work as Joe “Mental” Mentalino in Dumb and Dumber. We’ve never been so sad to watch a bad guy die (even for the laughs).

#2 Dan Hedaya

Dan Hedaya might be the biggest “name” on our list, and at times we were concerned that he was almost too big to be a “that guy”, but the first line of his IMDB bio sealed the deal: “Dan Hedaya is a familiar face from his work in films and on TV”. Yes, he IS a familiar face, but not a name. We’d say that 1995 was the year that Hedaya made it big, with The Usual Suspects, To Die For, and Clueless (could Cher’s dad be anymore angry and lovable all at once?) Our personal favorite is his role as the Detective working to arrest/save Reese Witherspoon in Freeway. Check it out if you haven’t seen it.

#1 Udo Kier

Unlike most of the guys on this list, Kier’s resume isn’t littered with Law and Order, CSI, or NCIS episodes. Kier’s bit roles are in major motion pictures: Blade, Armageddon, My Own Private Idaho, Ace Ventura. Kier’s also transcended pop culture boundaries, making appearances in Madonna’s scandalous “Sex” book and even a KoЯn music video. There’s no doubting the impact that Kier’s had particularly on the horror genre, and he never shies away from a role, no matter how disturbing it may be. His enthusiasm about acting is particularly admirable which is what puts him at the top of our list.

Together they pull pranks on other neighborhood kids while traveling from bed to bed in a magical underworld. Ultimately, Fred Savage has to decide if he wants to live in the underworld permanently or grow up and give up childish things.

We recut the movie to turn this family flick into a suspense thriller about a dad and his disturbing obsession with his two sons. We’ve eliminated the underworld and Howie Mandel in this version. Only creepy Daniel Stern remains. Ideally, the audience will be left horrified, biting their nails at the possibility that Stern will invade the Savage brothers’ room and have his way with them.

I’ve been a loyal watcher of Real Housewives of New York City for three seasons now. After watching part two of the three part reunion , (Really Bravo? Why not just have a giant three hour block—why drag this thing out in parts? I’d prefer a marathon over this…) I asked myself, “What if Housewives was a movie? Who could play the part of each housewife?”

Jill Zarin: Gina Gershon

Though some might argue Jill doesn’t have the Gina-looks, I disagree. She is fashion forward and savvy in her own Jewish way. I thought of Gina for this part, inspired by her role in Curb Your Enthusiasm as a Hasidic dry cleaner. I think she would be able to tackle Jill’s accent perfectly.

Bethenny Frankel: Angelina Jolie

I had to pick a fantastic actress for my favorite housewife. Bethenny was an outcast for much of the beginning of the show, as she was younger than the other women and the only not-really-a-housewife. But her character is much more complicated than this, as she’s a calculated business woman. Angelina would be able to provide strength and sass in this role, especially as she transitions into REAL housewife-ism and motherhood.

Alex McCord: Téa Leoni

Alex has a kind of understated beauty and understated personality. This is why many viewers have been reeling this season, when Alex has finally lost her temper. Tea Leoni would be able to make this transition nicely.

Ramona Singer: Cameron Diaz

Ramona DID say this season that she thought her new hairdo turned her into a young Cameron Diaz. Jill might have rolled her eyes, but I think this could be a good recast. Cameron is younger than the most of the other actresses, and she would be able to bring Ramona’s energy, unpredictability, and good looks to the movie.

LuAnn De Lesseps: Juliette Binoche

Maybe I just thought of her because I watched The English Patient episode of Seinfeld last night. I think Juliette could bring the kind of class and elegance to the role of the Countess.

Kelly Bensimon: Mary-Louise Parker

The role of Kelly might be the most difficult one to play. Kelly possesses a strange level of naïveté smushed with derangement. I’ve recently finished the first two seasons of Weeds, and I think Mary-Louise’s model looks and big doe-eyes would definitely help her enter a room with a loud “HAIIIIII!”

Sonja Morgan: Young Glenn Close

I struggled with this one—the newest housewife. Sonja is a sophisticated and sexy divorcee. I can only think of Glenn Close twenty years ago–we’re talking Dangerous Liasons and Fatal Attraction. If you don’t think Glenn Close can be in tune with her sexuality, you have not seen these movies. Let’s just erase the “dangerous” and “fatal” though. Real Housewives of NYC should never become violent! Save that for Real Housewives of New Jersey. (Yuck Yuck!)

I’m a stereotypical girl in my love of Lifetime movies, and, of course, my Recasts partner in crime Dennis groans when he enters the room and sees the tiny Lifetime logo on the bottom right corner of the television.. But what exactly is a Lifetime Movie? In its purest definition, it would be a movie that shows on Lifetime. According to UrbanDictionary.com, a Lifetime movie is “Misandristic propaganda potboiler films aimed at teaching women that all men are abusive rapists. The protagonist usually is a female who wishes to escape from her drunken husband or a young adult who is kidnapped and raped. There are many different lifetime movies, but all have a the same plot.” (The grammar stickler in me wants to point out that Misandristic isn’t technically a word, but that’s beside the point.) This definition is one worth noting, as it rings true in many cases.

But I think there is an unidentifiable quality in Lifetime movies that breaks past the stereotypes and sometimes simple plots to create a fun viewing experience for both women AND men. I also would like to inform you non-regular Lifetime viewers that Lifetime is branching out to include many movies that weren’t made for TV. For example, I caught Reservation Road the other week, starring Joaquin Phoenix, Mark Ruffalo, and Jennifer Connolly. This fantastic 2007 film was written and directed by Terry George, whose name you might recall from his work on Hotel Rwanda (which you all know was highly acclaimed). To help get you started as you begin your journey towards Lifetime-movie love, I’ve compiled a list of my top ten favorite Lifetime movies.

#10 The Hunt for the Unicorn Killer

This is one of the first Lifetime movies I remember seeing. Based on the true story of Ira Einhorn who killed his girlfriend then fled the country, Naomi Watts provides a memorable performance as Holly Maddux.

#9 Gone in the Night

Kevin Dillon and Shannon Doherty play the Dowaliby parents, who experience their worst nightmare when their daughter disappears from her bedroom in the middle of the night. As the parents are accused of murdering their own daughter, the investigation fails to keep its course towards finding the real killer. Ed Asner is also a nice surprise.

#8 She’s Too Young

A new favorite of mine. I didn’t switch the channel when I realized Alexis Dziena (who I knew and hated from Entourage) was playing the lead. A high school girl contracts a sexually transmitted disease. The discussion of STDs as a true epidemic, even in the supposed-to-be-perfect middle class realm, is actually insightful.

#7 Mother, May I Sleep with Danger?

Though this isn’t a movie I’ve watched multiple times like many of the other films, this is an “Oscar-winner” of Lifetime movies. This is the kind of role that kept Tori Spelling famous in between 90210 and her popular reality show Tori and Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood.

#6 See Jane Run

When I first watched Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, I found myself yelling at the screen, “Who is Lex Luther? Where do I know him from?” This is it. Joanna Kerns (of Growing Pains fame) and John Shea are the leads here. Jane comes to, amnesiac and covered with blood. There’s no way I’m spoiling all the twists and turns in this movie. You’ll never see it coming.

#5 The Face on the Milk Carton

I’d read the book by Caroline B. Cooney when I was in middle school, and the movie almost lives up to the book. The premise is this: What happens when you realize YOU are that face on the milk carton? And what happens when you try to figure out who you really are? Life obviously becomes increasingly complicated. Kellie Martin (my favorite Lifetime actress of all time) is wonderful as the red-headed lead.

#4 Stand Against Fear

A sentimental favorite. The premise is simple, football players sexually harass cheerleaders. Yes, I’ll acknowledge that this is the kind of plot that makes you non-Lifetime watchers cringe. But the acting here is really what stands out. Sarah Chalke (Roseanne’s part-time Becky and more popular in Scrubs) and Lochlyn Munro (Night at the Roxbury, Dead Man on Campus, and Freddy vs. Jason) are excellent rivals.

#3 Face to Die For

I just watched this one again today, and it bumped its way up the countdown. Yasmine Bleeth plays a woman who was terribly injured and scarred as a child in a freak car accident. Her facial scars and emotional scars are evident, as she’s manipulated by a man who wants to rob the antique store she works in (enjoy Seinfeld’s Mr. Pitt as her boss!) After she’s jailed and receives reconstructive surgery, the only thing on her mind is revenge! Hilarious and sad all at the same time.

#2 On the Edge of Innocence

I love this movie, haven’t seen it in years, and would LOVE to have this on DVD. Two mentally ill (one with bi-polar disorder and one with uncontrollable anger) teens meet and fall in love in a mental institution. Here’s the time for name dropping: Kellie Martin, James Marsden, Terry O’Quinn, Jamie Kennedy, Joshua Jackson, Clea DuVall. I guarantee you there are even more recognizable faces in this giant cast.

#1 No One Would Tell

The most famous Lifetime movie of ALL time. Fred Savage plays an abusive boyfriend and Candace Cameron his helpless victim. This movie was made at the right time (1996), when both Savage and Cameron were still close enough to The Wonder Years and Full House to make us really get into this movie. Nostalgia still holds true today, nearly twenty years later. Though arguably this movie has a few plot holes and pacing issues, this is a movie that can stand multiple viewings, both by yourself and with a group.

I teach freshman composition, and this semester I had a whole day dedicated to “roadkill poems”. “Traveling through the Dark” by William Stafford has always been one of those poems I read early on in my writing career that made me go “Wow!” I know this isn’t the appropriate forum to advertise poetry, but these poems really got me started thinking about animals and cars. Are they inherently linked? If these keep showing up in literature, they’ve got to be in film too. And the more I thought about it, I realized they are.

So here are my top five favorite animal and car moments in movies.

#5 Puffy from There’s Something About Mary

Puffy was injured in a freak speed accident, brought on by the maniacal Pat Healy. As if a tiny Benji-like dog in a full body cast wasn’t funny enough, during a montage scene Ted is loading Mary’s SUV with groceries, and he puts Puffy on top of the car. Of course, he forgets Puffy, who rides on top of the car the entire ride home, weighted down by the cast. So sad.

#4 Tyson’s Tiger from The Hangover

Drunk out of their minds, the crew decided it would be a good idea to steal Mike Tyson’s tiger. Unfortunately, when they have to return the tiger, he wakes up a little too soon from the tranquilizers, slashing into Phil’s neck and taking over the car. Their near “tunnel death” is surprising and strange.

#3 Rabid Raccoon from Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle

As if their quest for the perfect burger wasn’t difficult enough, things are really messed up when a rabid raccoon comes into the picture. It sneaks into the car and attacks the stoned victim of Harold. But the attack isn’t just for laughs. This actually leads into some important plot points, as it gets us to the hospital to find out the severity of Kumar’s family pressuring him into the medical profession.

#2 The Deer from Tommy Boy

Wray said it best in Planet Terror. “I read a statistic that said the eating of venison has risen 30 percent in the last few years. 60 percent of that is from road kill”. All the time, especially in a rural area, people who hit deer load the deer into their cars without even thinking twice. Regardless of their motivations (to eat or not to eat roadkill..hmm..), I’ve heard stories of these deer waking up. They weren’t dead, but only in shock. And this is what Tommy Boy shows us—a deer waking up in a person’s car when you least expect it.

#1 Dinky the Dog from National Lampoon’s Vacation

This is the iconic unavoidable one. The crazy aunt’s had a crazy dog through the whole movie. But when Clark Griswold tied the dog to the bumper while they finished packing the car, it seemed harmless enough. The family would have never found out if not for the compassionate motorcycle cop pulling them over to lecture Clark about his cruelty to animals. I’ll never forget that sad moment when the cop comes back for one last line, “Here’s the leash, sir. I’m going back to get the rest of the carcass off the road.”

BONUS Roadkill Raccoon from Vacancy

I’ve included this one because I have to prove to you that animals and cars aren’t only restricted to the comedy genre. You might think that this is simply a movie about an estranged couple ending up stuck in a psychotic death trap of a hotel. This isn’t the case at all. When a raccoon runs in front of their car and David Fox has to swerve, the car can’t handle his swift maneuvering, malfunctioning and providing the catalyst for all the horror to come. If it weren’t’ for that pesky raccoon, this movie wouldn’t exist.

The only episode of The Office that I’d ever seen was on an airplane, while I was half asleep without headphones. This was about three years ago. In the past couple months I’ve ended up watching the entire series and fell in love with it.

Though I agree with most viewers that the show has gone downhill after season two, I’ll still watch the series until it ends. I have actually enjoyed a handful of the episodes of season six more than most of the season three through five. Episodes like Sabre and Scott’s Tots are excellent.

The latest episode, The Delivery, was pretty weak. The thing that annoys me the most is how Pam is completely different since she is no longer the “engaged receptionist in love with another man”. Her wanting the extra day free in the hospital was beneficial to the episode, because they could show more of the characters interacting within the office, but this is really out of character for Pam.

The only thing that made me laugh was Michael Scott taking on the role as Cupid, shooting everyone with fake guns. After that scene I thought I could do something with the footage…
